  • Why might incorporating graphic design into your classroom be valuable?

Incorporating graphic design into the classroom could be a great visual to grab and keep the students attention. You can use it to make learning more visually stimulating, rather than having a piece of paper where students are labeling the parts of a body, instead you could have a 3D image of different bones and students could use pointers with numbers to match the approprorate area. Graphic design is a great way to have students visual engage in their learning. It is also a great way to have students express their creativity and undersatnding of the topic at hand.

  • Thinking about how our students absorb information, how might we better support the learners in our classrooms?

There are a number of different types of learners in todays educational system. We have students who learn through hearing, visual, and students who learn best by using their hands (plus many more). However, we as educators need to be able to adapt and try to meet all of these learners learning needs at one time...which can be quite difficult. You can use graphic design as a visual aide so students visually see the information (along with written information) in an organized way that helps them better understand. You can use graphic design as a learning project (students can create their own inforgraphic or graphic) to help students express their creativity and show how they visually undersatnd the task at hand...the possibilites are endless and classrooms need to have visuals!

  • Envision an activity, unit or event that is approaching how might you incorporate some of the design principles?

The Design Principles are Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and proximity. Within our classroom we cook a variety of different food items. The next unit will be cooking pizza with a bagel. I could incoporate the design principles within this unit by creating a hands on activity using the smart board. I could generate graphics or the different ingredients and tools we will use within the kitchen and have the students create the food item in a simulated process. OR I could have teh students create their own graphic of how to properly make a pizza with a bagel. This graphic would have to include all of the steps, ingredients, and materials used, but it could be a great way for students to express their understanding of the cooking process.

  1. I love that pizza-making graphic idea! I could easily envision it as an infographic---toppings, sauce etc...maybe you could even make it as a class while you are building your pizzas. I think infographics don't have to be super polished beautiful posters as we might think. Listing the toppings and steps out and drawing icons for each topping and numbering the steps could be a good start! Definitely a /fun/delicious visual! :) YUM. I agreed with you an also highlighted how graphic design helps us visually organize information. Thanks for sharing! -Megan

  2. Kevin, I never thought of using graphic design for labeling models. That would make science and social studies so much more interesting for my 5th graders. I completely agree with you that using graphic design would allow for creativity and understanding. Students enjoy when they get a choice in the matter of how they demonstrate their learning. Activities and projects are so much more interesting than a paper test. ~Kathy

Kevin, I love this idea! I'm currently trying to improve the looks of my classroom and I want the focus to be on what students are learning and how they are showing their knowledge graphically.
